IU Police Department Indianapolis offers traffic safety tips

INDIANAPOLIS – With the addition of new student housing and cafeterias at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis as well as academic classrooms, all of which are located in the Tower and Hine Hall, pedestrian traffic is expected to be much heavier than in previous years. Drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians all play a part in traffic safety. Below are a few tips to keep everyone safe as they navigate their way through campus.

Drivers need to:

  • Slow down and obey the posted speed limit.
  • Always look for pedestrians, especially when turning at an intersection with a traffic light.
  • Respect bike lanes and watch for bikes before turning.
  • Watch for vehicles that could be stopping for pedestrians. Indiana law forbids passing a vehicle from the rear when it has stopped at a crosswalk for a pedestrian

Pedestrians need to:

  • Cross the street at marked crosswalks and intersections.
  • Stop and look every time before crossing the street.
  • Use pedestrian push buttons and obey “walk” and “don’t walk” signals.
  • Make eye contact with drivers to confirm they see you. Never assume they do, even with eye contact.

Bicyclists need to:

  • Slow down and make eye contact.
  • Don’t ride on the sidewalk; crossing streets between sidewalks is dangerous.
  • Ride  with the flow of traffic, not against it.
  • Don’t stop in a stopped vehicle’s blind spot.
  • Signal your turns.
  • Information on bike lanes and how to use them, is available in a video from SustainIndy.
