It requires coordinated teamwork to change the tires on racecars at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. That’s why the track will be the setting for an upcoming exercise for local high-talent executives in the 2013 Hoosier Fellows class, hosted by the Indiana University Randall L. Tobias Center for Leadership Excellence. Participants represent local companies ranging from IU Health to Duke Realty, Herff Jones, Inc. and Eli Lilly and Company.

“We all know that when speed goes up, safety and quality are going to go down, so how do you maximize the group’s performance?” says Carol Madison, executive director at the Tobias Center for Leadership Excellence. “This group will study how to get the best team performance. They will serve as a pit crew, they will change tires on a racecar and they will try to get the best possible performance while balancing speed, safety and quality.”
The 2013 class is composed of 17 high-talent executives and professionals from a wide variety of industries, working to enhance their leadership skills through a yearlong study with the Tobias Center. Each month, the group meets for 24-hour sessions to study a different element of leadership. In addition to the Pit Crew Challenge, Hoosier Fellows have also studied military leadership at Camp Atterbury, Benedictine leadership at St. Meinrad Seminary and ethics of leadership at DePauw University’s Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics.

“It’s a very interesting roster of companies and organizations that represent the Hoosier Fellows cross section approach to leadership,” says Madison. “Discussions are so rich. You start putting all those points of view and experience together and you have a great discussion about leadership.”
