Regenstrief Institute and Merck launch unique post-doctoral training opportunity

The Regenstrief Institute, in collaboration with Merck, has created two visiting scholar positions to provide post-doctoral training at the intersection of pharmacoepidemiology and biomedical informatics at the institute.

The Regenstrief-Merck Scholar’s Award in Pharmacoepidemiology and Informatics seeks to develop world-class leaders whose goal is to improve the quality of health care through innovation, data analytics and research that supports personalized delivery of care.

Award recipients will engage in cutting-edge research using massive datasets and real-world clinical systems as they work to achieve the vision of a more efficient and effective health care system.

Upon the completion of two years of training and research, Regenstrief-Merck Scholars will be poised to pursue advanced work in academia, industry, government and other environments that leverage clinical data and health information technology.

“Health care is evolving rapidly, with explosive demand for translating huge volumes of data into a meaningful understanding of care quality, efficiency and costs. This program is truly unique, and we are expecting exceptional applicants who will go on to become global leaders in the field,” said Regenstrief Institute investigator Jon Duke, M.D., M.S., who leads the collaboration with Merck for the institute and serves as Regenstrief’s chief innovation officer.

Individuals who have earned an M.D., Ph.D., Pharm.D. or equivalent doctoral degree are eligible for the Scholar’s Award.

The competitive two-year awards, for which applications are now open, commence as early as summer 2013. Upon completion of the second year, scholars will have earned a Master of Science in clinical research, a graduate degree program offered through the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute.

“There is a distinct and growing need to train leaders who are skilled in health information technology, epidemiology, and pharmaceutical science. The Merck-Regenstrief collaboration brings together two world-class organizations to do just that,” said Sachin H. Jain, M.D., chief medical information and innovation officer at Merck.
