Dr. Gallagher, who joined the School of Medicine faculty in 1992, succeeds Simon Rhodes, Ph.D., who has been named dean of the IUPUI School of Science. Dr. Gallagher’s appointment as associate dean for graduate studies is effective July 1.

In her research, Dr. Gallagher has focused on the molecular pathways that affect the cellular systems controlling cell death, or apoptosis, with the goal of using such information to design therapies to kill cells that are undergoing unregulated proliferation, such as cancer cells or vascular smooth muscle cells that replicate to block a blood vessel.

She received her doctorate from New York Medical College and served postdoctoral fellowships at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York and at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas.

She is a member of the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center.
