Spring House Calls volunteers provide home and lawn maintenance for elderly, disabled and minority homeowners in two inner-city neighborhoods located near the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis campus.
Nearly 150 IU medical school students, faculty, friends and family members will meet that morning at the Christamore House, 502 N. Tremont St., to get their work assignments, rakes, shovels, plants and other gardening needs. They then will fan out in the Haughville and Blackburn neighborhoods to help with yard cleanup, flower planting, mulching and other spring maintenance tasks.
After completing work at nearly 30 homes during the morning, participants will join the homeowners for lunch at the Christamore House for a final chance to connect and celebrate.
Co-chairs of this year’s project are second-year medical students Rob Kinne, Gracie Michels and Sam Corey.
Spring House Calls is the oldest service-learning project sponsored by the IU medical school’s Office of Medical Service-Learning, which promotes a lifelong commitment to community service through innovative service-learning experiences.
