<p>Members of the IU School of Medicine were honored March 4 as Health Care Heroes by the Indianapolis Business Journal. For the past 11 years, the annual awards program recognizes deserving individuals and organizations in the health care industry.</p>

IUSM winners by category are:

Community Achievement in Health Care

The Center for Youth and Adults with Conditions of Childhood; medical director – Mary Ciccarelli, MD, assistant professor of clinical medicine and pediatrics at IUSM. Staff members of CYACC include: Jason Woodward, Brittany Mak, Maggie McCullough, Tiffany Martinez, Christina Rogers, Katie Weber, Elise Montoya, Kerstin Sobus, Jane Taylor-Holmes, Steve Koch and Erin Gladstone. This unique program eases the transition to adulthood for youth with special needs.

Advancements in Health Care

George W. Sledge Jr., MD, Ballvé-Lantero Professor of Oncology, professor of medicine and of pathology, at IUSM and the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center, was the winner. Dr. Sledge was recognized for his pioneering role in treating breast cancer.

Vincenta Salanova, MD, professor of neurology and director of the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at IUSM, was a finalist in the category. Dr. Salanova was honored for her innovative care and research in epilepsy.

Physician

Gregory P. Gramelspacher, MD, professor of medicine and director of the Palliative medicine Fellowship at IUSM, and director of the Palliative Care Program at Wishard Health Services, was the winner. He was recognized for his dedication to the dying poor and program creation in the field of palliative care.

Robert M. Pascuzzi, MD, professor and chairman of the Department of Neurology at IUSM, finalist. Dr. Pascuzzi was recognized for his approach to patient care and research in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s disease.
