First- and second-year IU School of Medicine students at the Evansville campus recently partnered with Southwest Indiana Area Health Education Center (AHEC) to organize Heartbeat Heroes. It aims to generate more interest in the medical field to students often lacking access to such resources.

They visited eighth graders at Cedar Hall Community School, a local underserved school, to reach them more about the heart. After learning the heart’s basic structure and function, the kids utilized that knowledge in a pig heart dissection.

“By increasing interest in healthcare careers among young learners from underrepresented communities, this initiative hopes to inspire the next generation of medical professors,” Conner Barnes, an IU School of Medicine student in Evansville, said.
