Program Admissions

Any current, former or graduated student from a regionally accredited college or university can apply for admission into the Medical Laboratory Science Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree program at Indiana University School of Medicine. Students not currently enrolled at IUPUI must apply for enrollment at IUPUI before submitting the Health Professions Program application.

Students apply to the Medical Laboratory Science program during the fall semester for enrollment with the cohort starting the next fall semester. Most students submit their application during their third or fourth years of postsecondary coursework. Students who have already completed a bachelor’s degree may also apply.

Students accepted into the Medical Laboratory Science program must complete all of the program’s admission requirements before classes begin. Admission into IUPUI does not guarantee enrollment into the Medical Laboratory Science program.

Apply

Undergraduate students at Indiana University interested in pursuing a Bachelor degree in Medical Laboratory Science are encouraged to apply. A limited number of scholarships is available for accepted students.

Admissions FAQs

  • Is the Medical Laboratory Science program offered on two campuses?

Yes. IU School of Medicine's Medical Laboratory Science Program is offered at both the Indianapolis and Evansville campuses. The two programs are administered by the same academic department and share a common curriculum with similar educational experiences. Students in both locations are enrolled through the IUPUI campus. Students interested in either or both programs must apply for enrollment at IUPUI before submitting the Health Professions Programs application.

  • What are the prerequisite courses?
Prerequisite courses and minimum standards for admission into the Medical Laboratory Science program are detailed in the IUPUI Bulletin and in the Program Requirements file. Course checklists tailored for IUPUI students are available.
  • Am I required to complete all of the program prerequisites at IUPUI?
Prerequisite coursework completed at domestic, regionally accredited institutions is typically acceptable. The IUPUI Admissions Office and the Medical Laboratory Science program’s admission committee evaluate all domestic and international transcripts.
  • Do I need to complete all of the prerequisite coursework before applying to the Medical Laboratory Science program?
No. Prerequisite coursework must be completed by July 1 prior to entry into the program. Students must have successfully completed 84 semester credit hours of coursework before enrolling in the Medical Laboratory Science program.
  • Can I attend the Medical Laboratory Science program part-time?
The Medical Laboratory Science program is a cohort-style program with all students starting in the fall semester. Students must be full-time.
  • I already have a bachelors degree. Can I enroll for one course or area of this program?
The Medical Laboratory Science program does not accept students for just one course or laboratory area. Students receive training in all areas of the clinical laboratory in preparation for the American Society for Clinical Pathology’s (ASCP) Medical Laboratory Scientist examination. Students who are seeking categorical certification in just one laboratory area should consult the ASCP for information on pathways to obtain categorical certification.
