17th Annual Midwest Islet Club Meeting

The goal of the Midwest Islet Club (MIC) is to foster greater communication and interaction between pancreatic islet cell biology investigators within the Midwest region of the United States. The meeting will be composed of both senior and junior investigators, with two keynote speakers and presentations by trainees and junior faculty. 

The IU School of Medicine, Center for Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases and the planning committees are excited to welcome the 17th Annual MIC Meeting to Indianapolis, Indiana on Wednesday, May 7, and Thursday, May 8, 2025. The meeting will begin on May 7 no earlier than 2 p.m., allowing for travel to Indianapolis on Wednesday morning.

There are two named awards given as part of the meeting:  the Paul Lacy Medal Award for lifetime achievement in the field and the Robert Sorenson Young Investigator Award.

  • The Paul Lacy Medal Presentation and Lecture concludes the meeting and is presented to a prestigious member of the islet research community who has made substantial impact on our understanding of islet biology and who has shown a passion for training of the next generation of scientists. Recent award recipients include Drs. Rohit Kulkarni (Harvard), Maureen Gannon (Vanderbilt), Chris Wright (Vanderbilt) and Peter Arvan (Michigan).

To be considered for the Lacy Award, qualified individuals will be expected to have carried out research having a sustained and significant impact on the islet field. This award is open to nominees at the rank of Associate Professor or above and the nomination must be accompanied by a brief description of the candidate’s outstanding research contributions.

  • The Robert Sorenson Young Investigator Award honors an investigator who is beginning their career but has already made a significant impact in the field. The winner of this award gives a talk at the end of the first day of the meeting.

Nominations for individuals at the Assistant Professor level with 5 years or less in rank will be considered eligible for the award.

Nominations for the two awards will be collected via a RedCap site. The Awards Committee will then tally all of the votes received and select the winners. The award recipients will be announced at the Annual Meeting. 

The deadline to submit a Paul Lacy Medal Award and/or Robert Sorenson Young Investigator Award nomination is Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2024.
