Indiana University School of Medicine will continue to advance in providing excellent clinical care for breast cancer, and expand its role in research and surgical education with the appointment of Carla Fisher, MD, associate professor of surgery and newly designated director of breast surgical oncology.

A nationally recognized leader in breast cancer research and breast surgical education, Dr. Fisher’s personal commitment to both objectives aligns closely with the overall mission of IU School of Medicine. Dr. Fisher comes to IU School of Medicine from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where she was an assistant professor of surgery. Her substantive role in education is evidenced by her role as program director for their breast surgery fellowship program and associate clerkship director for the medical student surgery rotation at the Perelman School of Medicine. As an associate professor of surgery, Dr. Fisher will continue to be involved in the education of medical students and residents regarding breast disease.

“There is a powerful connection between research and education,” Dr. Fisher said. “I look forward to growing that connection with the next generation of surgeons, ultimately providing the best clinical care to breast cancer patients in the state of Indiana and beyond.”

Dr. Fisher, who assumed her new role on July 17, now oversees the Breast Surgical Oncology Programs at IU Simon Cancer Center, IU Health West, IU Health North and Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital. She will work to expand this program regionally and help oversee communication with this outstanding multidisciplinary team of physicians throughout the state. Dr. Fisher succeeds former director, Linda Han, MD.

Gary Dunnington, MD, chair for the Department of Surgery and Jay L. Grosfeld Professor of Surgery, said Dr. Fisher’s expertise, commitment and track record are what makes her a great fit for the school.

“Dr. Fisher’s passion, dedication to educational excellence, and her strong interest in leadership and leadership development is what really set her apart from other candidates,” Dr. Dunnington said. “I anticipate her demonstrated ability in the advancement of the academic mission at Penn will lead the way for the same rigorous advancement to the Breast Cancer Research Program at IU School of Medicine.”

Dr. Fisher trained in one of the premier breast fellowships in the country at Washington University in St. Louis and brings a strong record of academic productivity to IU School of Medicine.
