IU School of Informatics’ new minor program open to all Ph.D. students at IUPUI

INDIANAPOLIS – Ph.D. students at IUPUI have a new opportunity to broaden their knowledge and strengthen ties across campus. The Human-Computer Interaction, Bioinformatics and Health Informatics programs at the IU School of Informatics will offer a Ph.D. minor to graduate students regardless of their main area of study beginning this fall.

The Ph.D. minor’s purpose is to enable IUPUI doctoral students in other disciplines to learn, apply and use informatics program theories, principles and tools to tackle problems in their respective academic fields.

“Future scholars should have the opportunity to learn some of the fundamentals of another program to support and augment their research,” said Mathew Palakal, associate dean for graduate studies and research in the School of Informatics. “These degree options will serve the needs of students of many of the schools at IUPUI, most notably, the Schools of Science, Medicine, Nursing, and Engineering and Technology, among others.”

With the increasing use of and need for integration of technology, the School of Informatics Ph.D. minor will provide a unique opportunity for IUPUI students pursuing advanced degrees, Palakal said.
