The Division of General Internal Medicine & Geriatrics is excited to announce that Areeba Kara, MD, MS, will assume the role of Associate Division Chief, effective July 1, 2022. She succeeds Dr. Lexy Torke, who is now the inaugural Section Chief for Palliative Medicine.

In this role, Dr. Kara will assist the Division Chief, Dr. Greg Sachs, in all aspects of division management, including strategic planning; assisting with faculty recruitment and retention efforts; faculty evaluations and promotion and tenure efforts; finance and annual budget construction; representing the division at meetings with health system leaders and other partners; and working with GIMG’s section, center, and program directors to support their group’s goals as well as those of the division.  

Dr. Kara has served as a hospitalist at IU Health Methodist Hospital since 2003, focusing on diversity and equity, hospital-based care quality and safety, teamwork, and education. She serves on the Department of Medicine's diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) committee and serves on national committees for the Society of Hospital Medicine dedicated to furthering DEI. She will continue to direct the PACES Program for the division and serve as Key Clinician Scholar for the hospitalist service line.
