Medical student Carl Kay and his fiance

NAME: Carl Kay
SPECIALTY: Internal medicine
RESIDENCY MATCH: San Antonio Military Medical Center
REACTION: “We’re ready to be Texans, y’all!”

When Carl Kay began his medical training at IU School of Medicine’s Evansville campus, he quickly fell in love with everything about Southern Indiana, including his fiancé Gretl. Kay is an active member of his class, participating in several intramural teams, most notably the Soccer Starz. He is not only a leader within medical school and his class, but also in the Evansville community, volunteering for various organizations.

Kay realized the systematic approach to problem solving and the various career paths within medicine made internal medicine his ideal choice for a specialty. While searching through a sea of residency possibilities, Kay looked for a city with a balance of military experience, patient acuity, clinical volume and a focus on research and quality education. He also needed an area that would support his outdoor hobbies and interests. Through this search he found San Antonio Military Medical Center.

Carl participated in the military match. Therefore, he found out his Match placement a little earlier than others. He actually got the news while on vacation in Thailand but celebrated the same as if he were with his classmates in Indianapolis. When asked his first reaction to the news, Kay said, “We’re ready to be Texans, y’all!”
