On June 13 and 20th, Dr. Kowal taught dermatopathology to middle and high school students enrolled in the Doctor Camp and Camp MD programs offered by the Metropolitan Indianapolis-Central Indiana Area Health Education Center, together with the University of Indianapolis and Indiana University School of Medicine.
These summer programs provide an exciting, interactive educational experience for middle and high school students interested in pursuing a career in the health sciences. The medical discipline varies each year, and this year's focus was dermatology. Dr. Kowal engaged students at the microscope with review of normal skin histology as well as histologic findings in common cutaneous conditions.
From the Department of Dermatology, Dr. Patricia Treadwell spoke to the students about careers in dermatology and pediatrics. Additional speakers included Dr. Alvaro Tori, GME Senior Associate Dean for Diversity Affairs, and Dr. Chemen Neal, Executive Associate Dean and Chief Diversity Officer. As these camps are offered every summer, Dr. Kowal plans to continue her role as the teaching pathologist for future programs.
