With Phase 2 coming up soon for Class of 2027 members, two members of the curriculum team offer some important reminders.

Class of 2027: Expectations with Phase 2 approaching

Paul Ko, MD, MEd, associate dean of curriculum, and Amanda Benaderet, MD, MPH, FAAP, assistant dean for Phase 2 curriculum, are looking forward to guiding you on your Phase 2 journey. As you prepare to take the next step, they want to convey several important reminders.

Scheduling priorities and instructions

Instructions will be emailed to you mid-January by Amanda Ybarra, our registrar.

Clerkship Placement Optimization Program

Phase 2 scheduling is done using a Clerkship Placement Optimization Program. While the scheduling priorities you enter are noted, please understand that the program must take multiple elements into account as it crafts schedules for over 360 students.

Prioritize Requests

Place your schedule priorities in order of importance. For example, if you are getting married in February, your request for vacation during that time goes first on the list. If the location of a clerkship is most important to you, please note this and place it in a position of higher priority. There will always be an area to explain your requests.

Indianapolis students rotating at regional campuses

Indianapolis students may be placed at regional campuses for multiple clerkships and can be placed away from Indianapolis for as many as four months of time, not including Family Medicine.

- You can request rotations anywhere. Perhaps Indianapolis is your home campus, but you heard that a surgery rotation at a regional campus was incredible and that students get lots of opportunities to first assist. Please take advantage of these unique experiences. You will see where and when regional campus opportunities are available within the system.

- If you are assigned a campus that is not your home campus, we provide housing consistent with our Phase 2 Scheduling Guidelines and Medical Student Travel Guidelines.

Residency Options

The location of your clerkship rotations does not affect your residency options. You will have ample time for rotations in your fourth year to get letters of recommendation and prepare for your specialty of choice.

Submission Deadline

Complete your schedule priorities sheet by the deadline. Edits can be made until then. There is no benefit to being the first to submit your schedule priorities sheet. Take your time and complete it by the requested deadline. Nothing is reviewed or run until the deadline has passed.

We wish you continued success in your studies and will keep you informed as Phase 2 scheduling progresses.
