Members of the Indiana University School of Medicine Alpha Omega Alpha Society and the Faculty Community Relations Committee recently hosted a Mini-Medical School event on the Indianapolis campus for 50 local high school students in hopes of sparking interest in health-related careers.
“We hope they’ll be interested in pursuing careers in medicine while also learning different pathways to get into a medical career,” said Emily Coleman, a fourth-year medical student.
The students were from Arsenal Tech High School and Crispus Attucks High School in Indianapolis. The theme of the day was concussions. Students first listened to a lecture about concussions and then went to the Simulation Center to rotate through hands-on training sessions.
“The students got to do a variety of activities to learn about how to spot a concussion, like wearing concussion goggles to see what it’s like to have one,” Coleman said. “They also learned how to prevent concussions and how they are treated.”
The event is typically held each spring for students from Indianapolis Public Schools, but was on hold in recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Funding for the event was provided by Scientech.
