OB-GYN announces award winners in 2023 ceremony

Each June, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology holds a graduation and award ceremony to honor its own faculty, residents, fellows and staff. Below is a list of the 2023 winners.

 

Clerkship Awards

APGO – The Excellence in Teaching Award
This award recognizes a faculty member for best teacher of medical students.
Winner: Jessica Parker, MD

Michael J. McMahon Resident Teaching Award
This award recognizes any resident who demonstrates excellence in the teaching of third-year medical students.
Winner: Shae Jansen, MD

Residency Awards

John E. Mackey Art of Medicine Award
Voted on by all residents and faculty, this award recognizes any resident who demonstrates a humanistic approach to patient care.
Winner: Kelsey Pape, MD

Second-Year Resident Teaching Award
Voted on by the current intern class, this award recognizes a second-year resident who demonstrates excellence in teaching.
Winner: Shae Jansen, MD

Richard S. Hansell Leadership and Career Development Award
This award recognizes a third-year resident with outstanding leadership and interpersonal skills.
Winner: Rachel Tang, DO

SASGOG Resident Award
This award recognizes an upper-level resident who has distinguished themselves academically and demonstrated an interest in a career as an Academic Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Winner: Bea Soderholm, DO

Dr. Jennie L. Batson Award
Dr. Jenne Batson was an OB-GYN resident from the Class of 1988, who died of ovarian cancer in 1997. This award honors the spirit of Dr. Batson and recognizes a chief resident with a keen mind and indomitable spirit with outstanding clinical and surgical skills, just like Dr. Batson.
Winner: Allie Mahdasian-Miller, MD

Robert E. Rogers, M.D. Gynecology Award
Voted on by all attending faculty, this award recognizes a chief resident showing continued excellence in the practice of gynecology.
Winner: Niki Minalt, MD

Dr. Marguerite K. Shepard Senior Resident Achievement in REI Award
Nominated by Professor Emerita Dr. Marguerite Shepard, this award recognizes a chief resident who demonstrates outstanding achievement in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.
Winner: Ruby Benn, MD

Dr. Paul G. Schoon Award
Voted on by current OB-GYN first- thru third-year residents, this award recognizes a chief resident who exhibits excellence in teaching in the operating room.
Winner: Allie Mahdasian-Miller, MD

Dr. Velvet Miller Family Planning Award
Voted on by the Family Planning faculty, the Velvet G. Miller Award recognizes a chief resident who demonstrates excellence in the field of Family Planning. The winner possesses superb operative and procedural skills, demonstrates scholarly prowess, provides care in a compassionate, patient-centered, professional manner, and – just like Dr. Miller – advocates for reproductive justice.

Fellow Teaching Award
Voted on by all residents, this award recognizes the OB-GYN fellow who contributed most to resident education.
Winner: Colette M. Gnade DeMik, MD

 

Faculty Awards

Marilyn F. Graham Award
Voted on by the graduating chief residents, this award recognizes a non-faculty, non-resident, clinical or administrative staff member who demonstrates compassion and excellence in medicine.
Winner: Weah Malone, RN

Munsick-Ragan Award
Voted on by the graduating chief residents, this award recognizes a faculty member for excellence in teaching of the graduating chiefs.
Winner: Emma Balfanz, MD

CREOG National Faculty Award for Excellence in Resident Teaching
Voted on by all residents and sponsored by CREOG, this award recognizes a faculty member for promoting high standards of residency education in Obstetrics & Gynecology.
Winner: Emily Cassell, MD

SASGOG Faculty Award
Voted on by department specialists and the department chair, this award recognizes a generalist faculty member who exhibits excellence clinically, in mentorship, career development and research.
Winner: Maryann Chimhanda, MD, MS
