A message from the director of the IU School of Medicine ophthalmology residency program

Director's Message

Dear applicant,

Welcome to the IU School of Medicine Ophthalmology Residency Program, and thank you for your interest in our program.

We take the responsibility of training the next generation of ophthalmologists seriously and are fortunate to provide your training in a diversity of settings. This includes the VA, the county hospital, university hospitals, our nationally ranked children’s hospital, and various private practice settings in the region. You will also have the opportunity to participate in a rich international ophthalmology experience through Orbis International. With graduated autonomy in the clinics and ORs, our program is highly regarded for graduating residents who are confident and competent ophthalmologists, whether or not you decide to pursue further fellowship training.

Just as I was told when I joined the department in 2015, you become part of a team when you join this department, and it is this culture of teamwork that defines the core of our residency program. Each year, you will spend several months working closely with co-residents, staff, and faculty in various clinics. The camaraderie and relationships that build from these work settings are lifelong and defining takeaways for our graduates. You will find our faculty to be genuine and approachable in our mentorship, and our biggest priority becomes seeing you succeed professionally and personally. We are proud of our program and especially our residents. We look forward to welcoming you to learn more about our residency training in Indianapolis.

Sincerely,
