Each month, the Department of Medicine recognizes one of its staff members for having gone above and beyond in their role. Those featured have been nominated by a colleague or supervisor for their dedication and hard work.

Jennifer Gross is smart, detailed and always helpful.

Recently, while a colleague was out on leave, Gross stepped up to take on their duties in addition to her own work as a Service Line Administrator in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics.

Co-workers and department leaders say Gross does a great job engaging with her team and ensuring she is communicating well with everyone. And while covering another Service Line Administrator (SLA) role from August to October, she had to learn new leadership styles and quickly build new relationships in order to be successful.

“She is proactive, quickly responds to requests, creative in coming up with solutions, and a big advocate for faculty and staff members,” said Dr. Nabil Adra.

“She was very responsive to faculty and team members,” said Tara Casey, Associate Vice Chair of Operations. “We thank her for her extra time and work to help out another division.”

A Q&A with Jennifer Gross, Service Line Administrator, General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics

How long have you been in your current role? How long have you been at IU?: Current role, 4 years. IU Health, 7 years.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

I enjoy the challenge of leading our incredibly talented physicians, advanced practice providers, and support teams. There are always challenges to work through to continuously improve. I appreciate being a part of a team with such creativity and dedication to doing what is best for the patient.

Have you recently completed a project, learned a new skill, or hit a major milestone?

I am honored to be an IUHP Values Award Winner for Team this year with our Department of Medicine Service Line Administrators. This team is well engaged in our health systems and cares about their team's ability to care for their patients. We help one another with questions, solving problems, networking, and support when needed for tough times or celebrations in life.

I recently helped out in two of our other service lines. I really enjoyed working with the teams and helping solve issues while their administrator was out on leave. I was able to understand more about facility service lines, partnering with an Institute of Care, and leading a large team across multiple locations in central Indiana.

Please share a bit about the people at work who inspire, challenge and motivate you.

Our geriatric physicians, nurse practitioners, and support team are inspiring to watch. They make patients so at ease and comfortable, like they are talking with their own family members.

Tara Casey is also inspiring. She is an amazing leader with great coaching skills. I can talk to her about how things are going personally or professionally and walk away feeling supported. She helps keep me in challenging roles to further my learning and professional development.

How do you like to spend your time when you're not at work? Can you share the details about a recent trip, project, accomplishment, or other activity you enjoyed?

I enjoy traveling and spending time with my family outside of work. My husband and I recently went to Seattle to meet our new granddaughter. Luckily, they will be moving closer to us soon! Also, I have three amazing women with whom I spent my college years with as sisters in Phi Mu Women's Fraternity at IUPUI. Since college, we have traveled 2-3 times a year and have celebrated our milestone birthdays together in places such as Las Vegas, Chicago, New Buffalo, and Gatlinburg.
