Student Evaluations of Basic Science Courses and Clerkships

The Program Evaluation Pillar of the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education promotes quality improvement and institutional excellence by understanding the educational needs and experiences of students at IUSM and providing faculty with actionable information that can be used to further curricular effectiveness. One of the ways in which we achieve these objectives is through our student evaluation process where we gather feedback from medical students and disseminate results and meaningful comparisons to faculty.

We recently finished collecting data from student evaluations for the fall 2013 semester. Evaluation reports for both basic sciences and clerkships can be accessed by logging-in to the Faculty Education System (FES) using your IU/IUPUI user name and passphrase. In addition to averages for each item, evaluation reports for basic sciences contain meaningful comparisons to discipline, center, and school averages for each item. Similarly, evaluation reports for clerkship preceptors contain comparisons to the department and school. Unedited student comments are also provided. The current evaluation forms were developed by the Basic Science Component and Clinical Component and approved by the Curriculum Council Steering Committee.

Once in FES place your cursor on Evaluation Reports, located in the main menu, and a drop down box will appear containing the following:

  1. Overview: On this page, you can view all the student evaluation forms currently administered by UME as well as the evaluation forms previously used in the basic sciences and clerkships.
  1. Basic Science: Place your cursor on Basic Science and another box will appear containing the various options. Center Directors and Department Chairs can view all course and instructor reports for the specific courses at their center or in their department.  Course Directors should be able to view course reports for the specific course(s) they directed and all instructor evaluation reports associated with the specific course(s) they directed. Instructors do not have access to course evaluation reports and are encouraged to contact the Course Director to review findings and discuss potential action plans. Instructors can view their instructor evaluation report(s) if the number of student respondents is greater than or equal to 5.
  1. Clerkship: Place your cursor on Clerkship and another box will appear containing the various options. Center Directors and Department Chairs can view all clerkship and preceptor reports for the specific clerkships at their center or in their department. Clerkship Directors should be able to view all clerkship reports for the specific clerkship they direct and preceptor evaluation reports associated with that clerkship. Preceptors can view their individual evaluation report(s) if the number of student respondents is greater than or equal to 5.

If you experience difficulty logging-in to FES or would like to discuss the student evaluation process at IUSM further, please contact Dr. Tony Ribera, Director of Program Evaluation, at aribera@iu.edu or 317.278.9629.
