This Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, the Department of Mental Health Services (DMHS) would like to express appreciation for the IU School of Medicine AAPI community and their valued contributions to the advancement of medicine and medical education.
May was designated as AAPI heritage month in 2009 in order to honor the history and culture of the AAPI community. The month of May was specifically selected due to its historical significance as the month in which the first Japanese immigrant arrived in the United States (May 7th, 1843) and also the month in which the last spike on the transcontinental railroad was laid by Chinese workers (May 10th, 1869).
Here at DMHS we honor and celebrate the AAPI community for their unique culture and identity, and for all they have done for this nation. We at DMHS also acknowledge the increased hate that has been directed towards the AAPI community in part due to anti-pandemic racism over the past few years and recognize that these challenges are far from being resolved. With education and exposure to the stories of our AAPI colleagues, we can increase our individual and collective knowledge thereby providing better support and care for this community.
This May the DMHS staff would like to encourage you to read, listen, and watch the stories of members of the AAPI community.
