Learn more about IU medical student disability coverage

IU School of Medicine provides group disability coverage for all students. This policy has been designed to meet the unique needs of medical students.

Here are key points of what can be available:

  • Monthly benefit of $1,500 payable after 90 days of disability with benefits payable to Age 67 (or Social Security normal retirement age if longer) for qualifying disabilities.
  • You can receive benefits for a maximum of 24 months during your lifetime for a disability caused by a mental disorder or substance abuse.
  • However, if you remain confined to a hospital solely because of a mental disorder at the end of the 24 months, this limitation does not apply while you remain hospitalized.
  • Disability relates to the ability to actively participate in school during the first 60 months of your disability; after that, you must also be unable to perform the material duties of any occupation with reasonable continuity.
  • Loan Payoff benefit provided that can repay up to $250,000 of eligible student loans for qualifying total and permanent disabilities.
