The IU School of Medicine Department of Neurological Surgery is welcoming a new faculty member whose advanced training in spine care will add clinical expertise to the department’s team of dedicated spine surgeons.
Gordon Mao, MD, assumed his role as assistant professor on July 19 and will focus his practice on all spinal conditions, using standard and advanced techniques such as minimally invasive and robotic techniques and deformity correction. He joins the Department after recently completing a Complex Spine Fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
Mao earned his undergraduate degree from University of California, Berkeley and received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He completed his neurosurgery residency program at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. Mao has co-authored numerous studies published in international peer-reviewed journals and will continue to focus on outcomes research for spinal conditions.
“We are very excited to have Dr. Mao joining our comprehensive team,” said Department Chair Shelly D. Timmons, MD, PhD. “His addition will help us broaden the reach of the services we provide to more patients in the area and his passion for teaching and improving clinical outcomes through scientific research will benefit patients everywhere.”
Through advanced technology and experience, faculty spine specialists in the Department of Neurological Surgery provide both surgical and non-surgical treatment options for patients with an array of conditions, including back and neck pain, traumatic spinal column and spinal cord injuries, nerve and spinal cord compression from spinal degeneration and herniated discs.
