  • What are the options for urgent or after-hours care?

Medical trainees at IU School of Medicine with urgent psychological or psychiatric concerns can access guidance through a 24-hour dedicated phone line: 317-278-HELP (4357). A trained mental health clinician answers calls and provides step-by-step assistance to the caller.

  • How do I make an appointment?

If you are a new patient, please contact our office at 317-278-2383 or dmhs@iu.edu. For existing patients, please visit our Mental Health Services Learner portal to schedule an appointment with your provider.

Intake begins with an initial brief phone consultation with a clinician. After the intake, an initial evaluation appointment is set up with a therapist. Consents and demographic paperwork, along with an intake questionnaire, will be sent once an appointment is confirmed. All paperwork will need to be completed before meeting with the provider at the first session. If needed, a referral to a psychiatrist can be arranged after an initial appointment with a counselor.

  • Can I walk in for an appointment?

While we are unavailable to offer services on a walk-in basis, we are generally able to accommodate new appointments within a two-week time frame.

  • Do you offer telehealth?

The Department of Mental Health Services does offer telehealth via ZoomHealth on a limited and as-needed basis. If you are unable to attend a regularly scheduled in-person session, we encourage you to work with your provider to explore if a telehealth session is possible.

The Department of Mental Health Services takes a number of precautionary measures to protect your privacy and ensure that all services are confidential following strict HIPPA compliance. Additionally, we employ a third party EMR system that has no affiliation with IU School of Medicine, IU or IU Health.

  • What services do you offer for regional campuses?

In addition to our dedicated regional campus therapists, we collaborate with local providers and institutions to ensure that all learners have access to comprehensive mental health care regardless of their location. For more information on this, visit the Campus Resources page.
