The Indiana University School of Medicine–Gary campus is located on the IU Northwest campus in a highly populated urban region, south of Lake Michigan and just 25 miles from downtown Chicago. Students at this campus benefit from the IU School of Medicine’s high-quality statewide MD curriculum with the additional opportunity to join a unique four-year MD program in urban medicine, emphasizing primary care and other specialties of need in medically underserved communities. A wide variety of choices for third- and fourth-year clerkships provide access to a diverse patient population and a close relationship with attending physicians for challenging, real-world clinical experiences.
With 11 major teaching hospitals in the area with approximately 2,800 beds, medical students at the Gary campus have a vast variety of medical training opportunities. An expanded residency program is being developed for the Gary campus and will accommodate more than 100 new graduate medical education positions, beginning with a psychiatry residency program in Merrillville.
