Pediatric Surgery Fellowship

The Division of Pediatric Surgery offers an ACGME-accredited two-year postgraduate fellowship program in pediatric surgery. Incoming fellows are required to have completed a five-year ACGME-accredited residency in general surgery.

In the first year of this subspecialty training program, fellows spend eight to ten months on the pediatric surgery service with a required rotation in neonatology. Electives are available in urology, pathology, gastroenterology, critical care, anesthesiology and cardiovascular surgery.

Fellows participate in running one of the two clinical services and develop operative experience in the full range of neonatal surgery (including ECMO), prenatal counseling, acquired and congenital conditions of infancy and childhood, and childhood tumors. While training in the state’s only Pediatric Level I Trauma Center, fellows participate in the non-operative and operative management of a wide variety of injuries at Riley Hospital for Children. Pediatric surgery faculty take in-house call in order to allow the residents to maximize the day time operative experience.

Clinical Care

The Division of Pediatric Surgery is primarily based at IU Health Riley Hospital for Children. Faculty surgeons care for children with general surgery problems at a number of additional clinical sites throughout the state of Indiana. Extensive preoperative, operative and postoperative experience is available in the management of neonatal surgery, pediatric surgical oncology, ECMO and pediatric trauma as well as the more commonplace children’s surgical problems and ambulatory surgery. Riley pediatric surgeons have an active practice in advanced laparoscopic and thoracoscopic surgery. The multidisciplinary Pediatric Trauma Program is the only ACS-verified Level I children’s program in Indiana.
