Medical Scientist Training Program (MD/PhD)

The Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) at IU School of Medicine—Indianapolis, a collaboration between IU School of Medicine and Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University, offers a dual MD/PhD degree. This unique program integrates advanced clinical medical training with cutting-edge biomedical research.

MSTP students benefit from strong mentorship, diverse research opportunities and a distinctive curriculum in this highly competitive program. Its goal is to deepen understanding of molecular disease mechanisms and to foster the development of new therapies by combining strong clinical skills with expertise in the basic sciences.

Academic offerings range from foundational disciplines like anatomy and cell biology to innovative fields such as biomedical engineering, medical biophysics and medical neurobiology. The program has recently expanded to include training in sociomedical and behavioral sciences through the Indiana Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias (IADRD) Medical Scientist Training Program. Throughout their journey, students receive personalized guidance from nationally recognized leaders, making this one of the premier programs in the Midwest.
