IU School of Medicine’s Department of Microbiology and Immunology offers graduate-level education programs leading to a master’s or PhD degree. The master’s degree program gives participants the understanding and skills needed for employment in industry or academics—or advanced study. The PhD program prepares graduates for successful careers in academic research and teaching or in the business and industry side of bioscience, enabling them to participate in the process of biomedical research and scientific discovery.
The department has a group of innovative research scientist educators in the areas of immunology, pathogenesis, cancer and hematopoiesis, producing graduates with successful careers in research institutes, industry, government laboratories, colleges and universities.
Learning Environment
The department is large enough to offer diverse research areas yet small enough to offer productive faculty-student interaction. Students can focus degree curriculum in the areas of immunology, pathogenesis, cancer and hematopoiesis and conduct research in medically important areas of cancer, infectious diseases, autoimmune diseases, transplantation and genetic disorders within modern research facilities.
