Bio

Piiamaria Virtanen, MD, earned her medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. She was born and raised in Finland and moved to the United States at the age of 18. She pursued a career in neurosurgery due to her fascination with the complex and challenging pathologies and procedures, the intricate anatomy of the central and peripheral nervous systems, and most of all the privilege of caring for patients with diverse neurosurgical conditions. As a neurosurgery resident at IU School of Medicine, she he has a special interest in neuro-oncology, skull base surgery, and neurovascular surgery. 

In her free time, Virtanen enjoys spending time with friends, reading, poetry, podcasts, traveling, outdoor activities such as hiking and biking, spoiling her two cats, and trying out new activities and restaurants.
