Kevin Smith, MD, joined the Indiana University School of Medicine faculty in July 2010. He received his undergraduate training at Anderson University in Anderson, Indiana, from 1997-2001. From 2001-2005, he continued his training at Indiana University School of Medicine and followed up with his radiology residency from 2005-2010 with the Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences.
After completing his residency, he was appointed Assistant Professor of Clinical Radiology at Indiana University School of Medicine. He began his career serving the community division at IU Health North hospital. Besides establishing a successful diagnostic radiology practice, he also served on several medical staff committees and positions. These included a 2-year term as president of the medical staff and chair of the credentials committee.
In July 2016, he was appointed to the IU Health North Board of Directors and worked as a co-chair of the Quality Subcommittee. In 2018 this became the Board of the Indianapolis Suburban Region. In January 2018, he was appointed to the Associate Vice Chair of Clinical Operations position for the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences. During his tenure as Associate Vice Chair of Clinical Operations, he spearheaded many clinical improvements and informatics efforts, including developing a department-level radiology template-Autotext library and integrating modality DI-COM elements/measurements. He also worked to improve physician scheduling and staffing using a flexible demand-based approach. In addition, he worked with Department clinical radiologists and data experts to develop a clinical productivity dashboard that included detailed per-shift productivity and turn-around time analytics. In addition, he helped to create a national-level live event continuing-medical education program highlighting department faculty. Finally, in 2019 he helped develop a Leadership Department curriculum at the Department level to empower and strengthen Division Chief leadership.
In July 2022, he was promoted to the Vice Chair of Clinical Operations and Associate Service Line Leader for the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences. Dr. Smith is interested in quality improvement and process improvement. He has been involved in several different LEAN projects and processes.
Dr. Smith's clinical expertise area is centered around body CT imaging.
