Bio
Cary Jo R. Schlick, MD, MS, received her medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and a master’s degree in Health Services and Outcomes Research from Northwestern University.
Prior to joining Indiana University, Schlick completed a fellowship in Complex General Surgical Oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, NY and general surgery residency at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. She completed a chief residency in quality and patient safety at the Jesse Brown Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center in Chicago, IL.
Her clinical focus is in GI malignancies and includes the management of peritoneal surface malignancies, pancreatic cancer, primary and secondary liver tumors, benign and malignant biliary conditions, as well as gastric and small bowel neoplasms.
Schlick is a health services and outcomes researcher and her areas of focus include optimizing healthcare delivery utilizing quality improvement methodology and surgical education. She has coauthored more than 35 peer-reviewed publications.
Schlick is a member of the American College of Surgeons, Society of Surgical Oncology, Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, International Heapto-Pancreato-Biliary Association, Association for Academic Surgery, Association of Women Surgeons, Surgical Outcomes Club and Phi Beta Kappa National Honor Society. She has served on several institutional quality committees.

Schlick's research experience includes using institutional, collaborative, and national data to understand variation in care and utilizing quality improvement methodology to develop and evaluate targeted interventions for measured improvement. She has evaluated the development of and adherence to quality measures in the management of upper gastrointestinal malignancies and their association with cancer-specific outcomes. Schlick has additionally authored multiple papers regarding surgical trainee wellbeing and autonomy.
