Bio

Dr. Jason Chu, MD, MSc is a board-certified Pediatric Neurosurgeon and Associate Professor of Neurological Surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Chu is originally from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He is a graduate of Saint Louis University School of Medicine and completed his Neurosurgery training at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. Dr. Chu finished his Pediatric Neurosurgery fellowship at Texas Children’s Hospital. Prior to joining Riley Children’s Health in 2024, Dr. Chu was Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery at the University of Southern California.

Dr. Chu serves as a Surgical Co-Director for Pediatric Epilepsy at Riley Hospital for Children and has experience with intracranial monitoring procedures such as grids/strips and stereroelectroencephalography (sEEG) to identify seizure foci in the brain, resective surgery for epilepsy, laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT), hemispherectomy and other disconnection procedures and neuromodulation with responsive neurostimulation (RNS) or vagal nerve stimulation (VNS). He works in close conjunction with Riley Epileptologists, Neuroradiologists and Neuropsychologists at the Comprehensive Epilepsy Program to identify and tailor the best surgical treatment for pediatric epilepsy.

Dr. Chu also serves as the Director of Fetal Neurosurgery and has formed a close partnership with the Indiana University Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Riley Children’s Spina Bifida teams to perform in utero surgery for patients with myelomeningocele. The results of the Management of Myelomeningocele (MOMs) Trial suggest that in utero repair of myelomeningocele can decrease the development of symptomatic hydrocephalus, as well as improve developmental and motor outcomes in patients with open neural tube defects. Our group has adopted a minimally invasive technique that minimizes the risks of the surgery for the mother, while preserving the potential benefits of in utero repair for the fetus.

Dr Chu has a secondary focus in pediatric cerebrovascular disorders, including arteriovenous malformations (AVM), Vein or Galen malformations, cavernous malformation, and moyamoya. He also has clinical interests in hydrocephalus, endoscopic neurosurgery, brain and spine tumors and congenital abnormalities.

Dr. Chu has authored over 60 peer-reviewed papers and five book chapters. His research interests lie in translational neuroscience, functional neuroimaging in brain development and improving clinical outcomes for his patients. He is a member of the American Association of the Neurological Surgeons (AANS), The Congress of Neurologic Surgeons (CNS) and the AANS/CNS Section of Pediatric Neurological Surgery.

Outside of work, Dr. Chu is an avid cyclist, enjoys the outdoors, sports, live music and the automotive scene.
