Bio
Thomas Larrew, MD, MSCR is an assistant professor of neurological surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine and a pediatric neurosurgeon at Riley Hospital for Children. Dr. Larrew earned his medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina, where he went on to complete his residency in neurological surgery and obtain a Master of Science degree in clinical research. He completed a fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.
His clinical practice includes treating pediatric patients with neurosurgical diseases such as hydrocephalus, brain tumors, congenital cranial and spinal disorders, and traumatic brain and spinal injuries. He has subspecialty training in the surgical treatment of epilepsy, including traditional surgical approaches, non-resective techniques such as implantation of Vagus nerve stimulators and responsive neurostimulators, and minimally invasive surgeries such as laser ablation. Dr. Larrew is also a specialist in the surgical treatment of spasticity with operations such as intrathecal baclofen pump implantation and selective dorsal rhizotomy. Dr. Larrew has extensive experience in neuroendoscopy, providing a minimally invasive, implant-free approach to treat hydrocephalus in appropriate patients. His care goal for each patient and their family is compassionate care that is centered around shared decision-making between the patient and their family and himself, with consultation of all the highly trained experts at IU School of Medicine.
Dr. Larrew has a strong interest in clinical research spanning a wide variety of topics in pediatric neurosurgery. These include pediatric epilepsy surgery, spasticity, traumatic brain injury, hydrocephalus, tuberous sclerosis complex, and outcomes research. Dr. Larrew is also heavily involved in the Cerebral Palsy Research Network and serves as the site principal investigator for Riley Children’s at IU Health.
Outside of the hospital, Dr. Larrew enjoys the outdoors, music, watching collegiate and professional sports, fitness, and spending time with his family- his wife Hannah, their daughter Gwen, and their two goldendoodles Gracie and Fiona.
