Bio
Frank is a 1983 graduate of Columbia University (President Obama’s classmate) and graduated from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine (now Icahn) of the City University of New York in 1987. He completed an Internal Medicine residency at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He subsequently did a fellowship in General Internal Medicine/Primary Care Education/Clinical Research Methods at Indiana University School of Medicine. He is ABIM and ABEM certified.
Frank has been on the faculty since 1990. He is currently the Medical Director of Medical Management/Transition Support Department at Eskenazi Hospital.. He has been an associate medical director of the emergency department at Wishard Hospital (now Eskenazi Hospital) where he still works clinically, and the creator of and former director of the Eskenazi clinical decision unit. His clinical/administrative interests overlap around observation medicine, utilization review and health care financing and revenue cycle. He continues to collaborate with Department of Geriatrics members on research pertinent to older adults in the ED including delirium and dementia.
Frank has been recognized for teaching excellence with several awards and was the recipient of a $80,000 Clarian Values Fund educational grant, several grants to sponsor "mini-medical schools" for the local public (when he was the Chair of the IU School of Medicine Faculty-Community Relations Committee), and grants to support cadaver training labs. He has been a co-host for the Public Radio show “Sound Medicine” which is also podcasted. He took a leave of absence to be the Director of Clinical Operations for Indiana Medicaid in 2022-2023 when he was also a member of the Indiana Medical Licensing Board.
Frank has been a reviewer for the American Journal of Emergency Medicine and for the MedEdPortal of the Association of American Medical Colleges for which he was honored in 2010-2011 as one of its top 20 reviewers for comprehensiveness and quality.
Frank enjoys time with his wife of 33 years (a retired manager for Eli Lilly and Company) and his adult son and daughter. You may pass him (carefully) as he rides his bike to work.
