Bio

Karl Bilimoria, MD, MS, FACS, is the Jay L. Grosfeld Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery for the Indiana University School of Medicine. He also now serves as the Vice President of Surgery Quality for the IU Health system.

A graduate of the IU School of Medicine, Dr. Bilimoria is a highly accomplished physician-scientist with more than 450 publications and nearly $40 million in research funding for health services, quality improvement, medical education, and health policy research. His clinical practice is focused on melanoma and sarcoma.

Prior to returning to IU, Dr. Bilimoria served as a surgical oncologist at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago, professor of surgery and vice chair for quality in the Department of Surgery at Northwestern University School of Medicine, and system vice president for quality for the Northwestern Medicine health system. Dr. Bilimoria founded the Surgical Outcomes & Quality Improvement Center (SOQIC), a renowned research team of 65 faculty, fellows, and staff focused on health services, outcomes, health policy, quality improvement and implementation science, and medical education. He also established and serves as the founding director the 56-hospital Illinois Surgical Quality Improvement Collaborative and the 215-hospital national surgical education trials group. Dr. Bilimoria is transitioning his research teams to IU.

Dr. Bilimoria has had a longstanding interest in mentoring academic surgeons and surgeon-scientists. He was recently the president of the Association for Academic Surgery, the principal investigator for two NIH training grants, and the director of the research fellowship programs at Northwestern and the American College of Surgeons. He was awarded Mentor of the Year in 2020 by the Northwestern University School of Medicine.

Dr. Bilimoria earned his undergraduate degree in molecular and cell biology from Northwestern University and his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine. He then completed his residency at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, where he served as chief resident and earned a master’s degree in clinical investigation. Following residency, he completed a fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center and joined the faculty at Northwestern in 2011.

Dr. Bilimoria now resides in Indianapolis with his wife, Sheila, and his three children.

    Dr. Bilimoria's research interests focus on improving healthcare quality and delivery by (1) developing better ways to provide hospitals with comparative data, (2) providing hospitals with the tools to use their data to undertake internal hospital quality improvement efforts, (3) providing patients with better comparative data through public reporting, which can assist them in selecting the best hospitals and physicians for their care, and (4) performing evaluations of policies that impact healthcare quality.
