Dr. Akram Al-Makki is a nephrologist practicing at Indiana University Health – Arnett in Lafayette, Indiana, USA. He received his medical degree from Damascus University Faculty of Medicine in 1992. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in the specialty of Internal Medicine and the subspecialty of Nephrology. He is also affiliated with Indiana University School of Medicine and Purdue University College of Pharmacy. He has passion for medical research and medical education. He has been the Director of Graduate Medical Education at IU Health Arnett since 2012. He received multiple awards and recognitions for his involvement in teaching and patient care like the Trustee Teaching Award from Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM), Outstanding Preceptor Award, The Indiana University Health West Central Region’s (WCR) Values Leadership Award (VLA) and The AC Arnett Award. He lectured nationally and internationally on topics related to chronic kidney disease as well as other areas in clinical nephrology and hypertension. He was a member of a team of nephrologists who developed a simplified approach to emergency dialysis using novel treatment approach via stand-alone blood pump powered by car battery for treatment of acute renal failure in field hospitals in Syria. This modality helped save many patients with acute renal failure whether caused by shock due to hemorrhage or by crush injury. He authored and coauthored multiple peer reviewed papers published in different esteemed journals and presented in national and international medical meetings.
