Bio

I trained as a traditional internal medicine physician in an academic setting where I specifically requested electives during my residency that would prepare me for a wide range of practice situations. My initial emphasis was on critical care and, after completion of my residency, I developed and ran the first critical care unit at England Air Force Base in Alexandria, Louisiana. My training prepared me to perform right heart catheterizations, place arterial lines and chest tubes, and provide ventilator care. Subsequently, I passed the ABIM Critical Care board examination and the American College of Cardiology Electrocardiography examination. Although I have held several medical directorships over my career, my time as medical director and chief of staff for Select Hospital (LTAC) was both challenging and rewarding as we provided a much-needed healthcare option for patients while we worked toward and received full accreditation.

My administrative experiences have included running the Quality Department of a midsize hospital and later, working on the integration into the Indiana University Health System. Other medical directorships have included Population Health for IU Health South Central Indiana through 2018 and Anticoagulation Services for IU Health South Central Indiana for over 20 years. I am trained as a clinical investigator and locally serve the IRB. I am certified by the Collaborative institutional Training Initiative and provide lectures on Quality Improvement and Population Health Management.

I have been living and practicing internal medicine in Bloomington Indiana for over 30 years. During my career, I have served on numerous medical staff committees, including bylaws, credentials, ethics, medical executive, pharmacy and therapeutics, and quality improvement. I served on the Bloomington Hospital Board of Directors for three years and was Chief of Staff in 1993.

I was recruited to teach medical students at Indiana University School of Medicine, Bloomington in 1986 and I have continued teaching as the Director of the Faculty Ambulatory Clinic, Southwest Indiana Internal Medicine Residency in Vincennes.  As a charter member of the Society of Ultrasound in Medical Education, I initiated a program that teaches ultrasound anatomy and allows medical students in their first two years of training to use handheld ultrasound devices for ambulatory and bedside examinations. Ambulatory and critical care ultrasound training will be provided to residents at the Good Samaritan, Jasper Memorial and St.Vincent's hospitals beginning 2020.
