Bio

Dr. Ortiz serves as Assistant Professor of Surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine. Prior to joining Indiana University, she earned her medical degree from the University of Illinois Chicago College of Medicine and completed a fellowship in Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

Dr. Ortiz specializes in trauma, acute care surgery, and surgical critical care. She serves as Medical Director of Prescription for Hope, Eskenazi Health's hospital-based violence intervention program, and as Division Director of Research, Acute Care Surgery, at Eskenazi Hospital.

An implementation scientist and health services researcher, Dr. Ortiz focuses on violence prevention and postoperative brain health. Through her research and clinical leadership roles, she works to improve outcomes for patients affected by traumatic injury and advance evidence-based approaches to care delivery. She has contributed to more than 25 peer-reviewed publications and completed a Learning Health Systems Scholar K12 Award. She is an active member of the Surgical Outcomes & Quality Improvement Center within the IU Department of Surgery.

Dr. Ortiz is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and an active member of the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma.
