Dr. Eckel's academic focus is excellence in medical education. She has taught human gross anatomy and histology for the the last 25 years and neuroscience for the last three. Her early training was in locomotion biomechanics. She later transitioned to a more teaching-centered focus because of her passion for teaching. Her current academic focus is on teaching innovation (including integration of the medical curriculum) and educational outcomes research.

Dr. Eckel is the published author of four undergraduate anatomy and physiology laboeratory manuals that are published by McGraw-Hill Education. She not only authored the books, but did all of the anatomic dissections and photography for those books. These textbooks are used at schools both nationally and internationally.
