Bio

Jim is an Illinois native and graduate of the University of Illinois and University of Minnesota Colleges of Pharmacy in 1977 (BS) and 1979 (PharmD) respectively and completed his toxicology training at the University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences in 1980. He moved to Indiana in 1981 to be Director of the Indiana Poison Center where he married his wife of 30+ years, Judi Jacobi, PharmD, a critical care pharmacist at IU Health Methodist Hospital.

Jim joined the Department of Emergency Medicine in 2001 and also has clinical faculty appointments with both Purdue and Butler University Colleges of Pharmacy. He has precepted well over 150 pharmacy students and pharmacy residents as well as the medical residents and students rotating through the Medical Toxicology rotation. He is an excellent resource for pharmacology, pharmacokinetics and toxicology in general and has research interests in the epidemiology of poisonings, toxicokinetics, extracorporeal drug removal and evaluation of new therapies for intoxications. He is a board certified diplomate of the American Board of Applied Toxicology.

Nationally, Jim is very active in the American Association of Poison Control Centers as a former member of its board of directors and numerous committees including chairing the National Poison Data System Steering Committee. He is a past president and 2-term board member of the American Board of Applied Toxicology. The American Academy of Clinical Toxicology has honored him with its Distinguished Service Award and elected him a Fellow of the Academy. He serves as one of the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s representatives on the international Extracorporeal Treatments in Poisonings (EXTRIP) task force. He is also a Distinguished Practitioner of the National Academies of Practice and on the senior editorial board of the journal Clinical Toxicology.
