Gabriel R. Rios, MLIS

Gabriel R. Rios, MLIS, is the director of the Ruth Lilly Medical Library, Indiana University School of Medicine. The Indiana University School of Medicine is the largest medical school in the nation and includes nine campuses around the state. He leads a team of librarians and staff in collaborating with faculty, staff, and students distributed over nine campuses for their curricular, research, and clinical information needs. He has been in administrative positions with increasing responsibility and scope for almost 30 years. Mr. Rios has worked in several areas of librarianship, including leadership, planning, evaluation, management, organizational dynamics, research services, medical education, team building, health literacy, and information technology. In his current role, Mr. Rios provides strategic leadership and vision for the medical library. He is constantly on the lookout for new collaborations and partnerships locally and nationally and works with his teams to secure resources needed to support the mission of the IU School of Medicine (IUSM). 

 

At the university level, Mr. Rios represents the medical library at the Indiana University Council of Head Librarians and is a member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). External to the university, he serves as the past-president of the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL), a member of the Academic Libraries of Indiana (ALI) Mentoring Committee, and is an associate editor for the Journal of Learning Health Systems. Rios is also the chair of the Medical Library Association Artificial Intelligence Imperative Task Force and continues to share his knowledge of leadership through mentorship and teaching. Mr. Rios received his BA in anthropology from the University of Texas at San Antonio and his MLIS from the University of Texas at Austin.
