Bio
Dr. Shekhar Kubal’s area of clinical practice is adult and pediatric liver and intestine/multivisceral transplantation. He is the surgical director of the adult liver transplant program at IU Health. Under Dr. Kubal’s leadership, this program has expanded the donor pool through surgical innovation and contributed to IU Health ranking #3 in the country for liver transplant volume in 2018.
Dr. Kubal received his MD degree and residency training at Mumbai University in India. He completed a PhD in transplant research at the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom, after earning membership to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He joined the Indiana University School of Medicine, where he is an associate professor of surgery, upon completion of his abdominal transplant surgery fellowship at IUSM in 2011.
His clinical interests include living donor liver transplantation, which has taken him to the most experienced centers in the world for training. His research interests include fatty liver disease, ischemic reperfusion injury in liver transplantation and liver regeneration.
Dr. Kubal is the Region 10 representative for the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) Liver Intestine Transplant Committee. He also is a member of the Indiana Donor Network advisory board and editorial board member of transplant journals, including Clinical Transplantation and Liver Transplantation.
