Bio

Michael Moore, MD, is the Arilla Spence DeVault Professor in the Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery and serves as the Chief of the Division of Head and Neck Surgery.

Dr. Moore specializes in cancer removal and reconstructive surgery in the head and neck. He manages benign and malignant tumors located in the mouth, throat, skin, salivary glands, thyroid (parathyroid), nose, sinuses and anterior skull base. He has a particular interest in the management of advanced and recurrent head and neck malignancies, including skull base tumors and those in need of reconstruction using microvascular free tissue transfer.  His expertise also includes endoscopic and minimally invasive procedures through transoral robotic surgery and/or laser surgery.

Dr. Moore’s passion for head and neck cancer management comes from the challenge of treating cancer in this anatomically sensitive location.  Head and neck tumors and their treatments frequently impact patients in areas that are very personal to them, such as their appearance as well as their ability to eat, drink and breathe.  As a result, Dr. Moore is devoted to optimize the chance for cure while minimizing the functional and cosmetic side effects that could come with treatment.

Nationally recognized in the profession, Dr. Moore serves as the Chair of the Cancer Prevention Service of the American Head and Neck Society (AHNS) and is one of three head and neck surgeons on the American Cancer Society HPV Vaccination Roundtable. He is President of the Board of the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance, a not-for-profit organization devoted to the early detection and prevention of head and neck cancer and supporting those affected by the disease.

Ongoing research includes early detection and prevention of disease with an emphasis on strategies for increasing HPV vaccination rates as well as the development of novel techniques for head and neck cancer screening.  In addition to his academic pursuits, Dr. Moore teams with physicians around the world each year to provide surgical services and train local surgeons in eastern sub-Saharan Africa.

Dr. Moore earned his medical degree from UCLA School of Medicine and got his residency training in otolaryngology—head and neck surgery at Harvard Medical School before completing a fellowship in head and neck oncology and reconstructive surgery from the University of Washington.

Outside of patient care, Dr. Moore enjoys spending time with his family and is an avid bass fisherman.
