Dr. Kochhar is the Director for Research in Medical Education in the Dean’s Office of Educational Affairs, an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Family Medicine, and an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Anatomy, Cell Biology & Physiology at the Indiana University School of Medicine.  She received her MBBS (MD) degree from Maulana Azad Medical College, University of Delhi, India in 1994.  Upon completion of medical school, Dr. Kochhar served as a House Surgeon in Delhi until 1999.  She obtained her master’s degree in Health Administration (MHA) from Indiana University in 2003.

Dr. Kochhar is the institutional representative to the Society for Directors of Research in Medical Education (SDRME).  In the 2015-16 academic year, she was selected for the inaugural Next Generation 2.0 Faculty and Staff Leadership Development Program at IUPUI.  In the 2018-19 AY, Dr. Kochhar was selected as a Fellow in the Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) Program by the Association of American Medical Colleges; and was appointed to serve as Program Committee Member for SDRME and co-Program Chair for The Generalists in Medical Education (TGME).  In the 2019-20 AY, Dr. Kochhar was appointed to serve as the International Committee Chair for SDRME; and Member-at-Large for TGME.  In the 2020-21 AY, she was named the President-elect for SDRME.

    Dr. Kochhar's areas of expertise include educational research related to both UME and GME, physician workforce studies, health services research, program evaluations, community-based needs assessments, and effective leadership in research administration.  She has received continuous funding to support health services research and medical educational research, garnering over $2.8M as a principal investigator or co-investigator on 57 funded grants and contracts.  Dr. Kochhar has authored or co-authored 272 technical reports and 19 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals and has presented her work at 100 local / regional, 37 national and 3 international professional conferences.
