Bio
Brad Bohnstedt, MD is a dual-trained cerebrovascular/endovascular neurosurgeon who joined Indiana University School of Medicine in 2019 as an associate professor of neurological surgery. He is the director of neurovascular disease within the Department of Neurological Surgery and the director of the cerebrovascular and neuroendovascular fellowship. Dr. Bohnstedt has a passion for advancing the care of adult and pediatric patients with cerebrovascular and spinovascular disease within the state of Indiana and beyond.
Dr. Bohnstedt has an extensive background in open and endovascular aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation (AVM), dural arteriovenous fistula (dAVF), stroke, carotid revascularization, cerebral revascularization (STA-MCA bypass for moya moya), gamma knife radiosurgery, and spinal vascular malformations. He is also an active clinical participant in other areas of neurosurgery that include: trauma, spine and neuro-oncology.
With a passion for training the next generation, Dr. Bohnstedt holds the role of vice chair of education within the Department of Neurological Surgery and has been the neurosurgery clerkship director (2019-2025). Despite his busy clinic schedule, he works daily with medical students, residents, and fellows on ways to improve patient care, education, and research.
Dr. Bohnstedt has an active research schedule with clinical studies — internal and external funding — for both children and adults with cerebrovascular disease. He runs a lab developing novel devices for embolization of aneurysms and collaborates with researchers at Purdue University and the University of California Riverside. He has research interests in the areas of ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, aneurysms, AVMs, and hydrocephalus, among others.
