Patrick Vining, MD

Why I chose a career in CT surgery: I always knew I had an interest in medicine, and surgery captivated me early on in my medical school career. Cardiothoracic surgery drew me in after the first coronary artery bypass I observed. I was fascinated by anatomy and inspired by the seemingly artistic planning of surgical approaches. The more cases I saw the more I wanted to understand. I believe cardiothoracic surgery is a field that allows physicians to combine surgical principles, critical care, creative problem solving, and a real-world illustration of pathophysiology in a way no other field could. 

Why I chose IU School of Medicine: At my interview day I was extremely impressed with the camaraderie of the resident group and the supportive environment of the program was apparent. I felt like IUSM had a wide range of clinical experience, and that this was a place I would leave well-rounded and well-trained. 

Professional/ Research Interests: Adult cardiac – valve and LVAD; education; leadership. 

Personal Interests/ Hobbies: I enjoy watching baseball and football in my free time, exploring the downtown area, trivia nights at local breweries, and going to the movies.
