Bio

Michael grew up moving with his family throughout Latin America. They eventually settled in his mother’s home country of Nicaragua. After high school he moved to the US for further education. He went to medical school at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, Peoria and stayed there to complete a combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency program. He completed a pediatric critical care fellowship at Phoenix Children’s. He did an additional year of training combining a critical care ultrasound fellowship (London, ON) with a pediatric critical care global health fellowship. He spent 6 months in Blantyre, Malawi where he did ultrasound-based research in AKI in pediatric cerebral malaria. His clinical and research interests are in global health and the utilization of POCUS for assessing hemodynamics.

Outside of medicine he enjoys reading, hiking, biking and traveling with his wife (Amanda) and two children (Eleni and Gabriel). His family is big into baseball (go Giants!) and he relishes coaching his children’s teams.
