Bio

Dr. Tatsuyoshi Kono is an Associate Professor in the Pediatrics Department at the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM). He earned his Ph.D. at Tohoku University in Japan and completed his postdoctoral training in basic diabetes research at IUSM. Since joining the Diabetes Research Center in 2008, Dr. Kono’s research has centered on understanding pathways that alter β cell function and survival under diabetic conditions.

To date, Dr. Kono has focused on defining the role of β cell endoplasmic reticulum (ER) calcium dyshomeostasis and key calcium regulatory proteins during the progression of diabetes. His research will identify important signaling pathways that synergistically regulate ER, mitochondrial, and Golgi calcium homeostasis and will define new mechanisms that regulate β cell function and health. One of Dr. Kono’s goals is to continue to provide an open environment for education and R&D as a leader in international collaboration in diabetes research.
