Chancellor's Professor, IUPUI

Bio
An internationally respected expert in physical and psychological symptoms, Dr. Kurt Kroenke’s principal research interests include pain, depression, anxiety and other symptoms without discernible cause. Dr. Kroenke has developed multiple patient-reported outcome measures which have been translated into 100 or more languages and used globally, including the PHQ-9 depression scale, GAD-7 anxiety scale, PHQ-15 somatization scale, PEG pain scale, and P4 suicidality screener. The PHQ-9 and GAD-7 are now used by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, VA, Food and Drug Administration, as national guidelines, in electronic health records, and in scores of research and clinical practice settings.
Recently his research has focused on chronic pain, one of the most common problems seen in primary care. His work in this area examines the impact of treating depression and anxiety on pain, assesses stepped care to optimize pain and mental health care effectiveness, tests novel collaborative and telecare management.
Dr. Kroenke serves on editorial boards for JAMA-Internal Medicine, General Hospital Psychiatry, Psychosomatic Medicine, and Psychosomatics. In 2012, he was named distinguished educator by the Association of Clinical Research Training (ACRT). In 2018, he was the recipient of the Society of General Internal Medicine's Robert J. Glaser award, the organization's highest award. He has mentored more than 35 fellows and junior faculty and has more than 390 peer-reviewed research publications.

Active Projects
Motivational Addressing Anxiety among Low-Risk Chest Pain Patients in the Emergency Department Setting (PCORI, PI: Musey) 2020-2024. This 3-arm randomized clinical trial compares the effectiveness of telephone administered cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) vs web-based peer-supported CBT vs referral to primary care in patients preseintng to the emergency department with low-risk chest pain and anxiety. Role: Dual PI
Patient-centered team-based primary care to treat opioid use disorder, depression, and other conditions (NIMH, Site PI: Bushey) 2020-2024. This pragmatic randomized controlled trial compares a telecare collaborative care intervention to increase medication-assisted treatment and reduce depressive symptoms in patients with opioid-use disorder and concurrent depression. Role: Site Co-PI
Indiana Palliative Excellence in Alzheimer Care Efforts (NIA, PI: Sachs) 2018-2023. The randomized trial compares collaborative care of community dwelling patients with dementia and their family caregivers to standard care using an innovative home-based program. Role: Co-Investigator
Enhanced, EHR-facilitated Cancer Symptom Control (E2C2) Pragmatic Clinical Trial (NCI, PI: Cheville) 2018-2023. This trial will test the population level implementation of validated approaches to detect and effectively manage sleep disturbance, pain, anxiety, depression, and energy deficit/fatigue among patients with all types and stages of cancer. Role: Co-Investigator
The Indiana EMergency Care REsearch (Indiana EMCARE) training program at Indiana University School of Medicine (NIH, NHLBI, PI: Kline) 2016-2021. The Indiana EMCARE interdisciplinary program will recruit and train scholars to have the basis to become independent, R01-funded clinical trials in emergency care. Role: Co-Investigator
Interdisciplinary Training in Behavioral Oncology (NIH, NCI, PI: Champion) 2016-2021. The primary aim is to train pre-doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows in multi-disciplinary behavioral oncology research to help develop researchers who can integrate basic, clinical, and behavioral sciences. Role: Co-Investigator
