Bio

W. Graham Carlos III, MD is an Indiana University Bicentennial Professor of Medicine. He also serves as the Chief Physician Executive for IU Health Physicians at Eskenazi Health.

Dr. Carlos is a practicing pulmonary and critical care physician in the Indianapolis area and a faculty member in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at the IU School of Medicine. A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Dr. Carlos completed his medical school training at IU, his internal medicine residency and chief residency at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, and his pulmonary/critical care fellowship at IU in Indianapolis.

He joined the IU faculty in 2011 and has been highly awarded for his academic and clinical endeavors. These awards include the Indianapolis Monthly “Top Doctor” award and the prestigious IU School of Medicine Trustee Teaching Award. He has been selected by the graduating medical school class of IU School of Medicine to receive the “Golden Apple” award as their top professor for an unprecedented eight consecutive years.

His research interests center on medical education within his specialty where he mentors learners from all levels including students, residents, and fellows. Dr. Carlos is quite active within the American Thoracic Society, where he serves and educates physicians from around the world. In 2020, IU celebrated 200 years of existence and Dr. Carlos was named by the Dean as a “Bicentennial Professor” to represent the School of Medicine.

Locally, Dr. Carlos is also known for his frequent media appearances, including giving a medical voice to the COVID pandemic. He has also appeared on CNN, CNBC, and was on the cover of the NY Times Christmas issue in 2021 discussing the COVID pandemic in Indiana.

Finally, Dr. Carlos volunteers as a board member for Prescribe It Forward, a not-for-profit organization which seeks to improve the diversity of medical students through pre-medical school support and mentoring. His favorite thing to do is spend time with his wife, Jenny, and his three daughters at their Parke County "3 sisters" fruit tree orchard.
